US Embassy in Rabat commemorates 250 years of American independence with enduring Morocco ties

The US Embassy in Rabat recently hosted a landmark event to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, held for the first time at the ancient Chellah site.
The gathering brought together high-ranking Moroccan officials, diplomats, and public and private sector partners to reflect on nearly 250 years of friendship and cooperation between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco.
Morocco holds a historic distinction as the first nation to formally recognize the independence of the United States, laying the foundation for one of America’s oldest diplomatic relationships. This milestone celebration underlined the strength of bilateral ties across diplomacy, security, trade, and investment, while also showcasing growing collaboration in innovation, infrastructure, and economic development.
The event highlighted the deep-rooted American presence in Morocco, from the historic US Legation in Tangier—recognized as the oldest American diplomatic property worldwide—to the recent inauguration of the new US Consulate General in Casablanca. These milestones underscore a shared commitment to forward-looking cooperation.
Addressing attendees, US Ambassador to Rabat Richard Duke Buchan III emphasized that the 250th anniversary of American independence serves as an opportunity to celebrate “a partnership rooted in history, strengthened by trust, and firmly focused on the next 250 years.”
The Ambassador added, “This partnership reflects our dedication to deepening economic and human connections between our peoples, particularly through initiatives that support His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision of transforming the Moroccan Sahara into a hub for transatlantic partnership and opportunity.”
The celebration took place as Morocco participates in the World Cup hosted in the United States, further illustrating the vibrant human ties that continue to strengthen relations between the two nations.
The evening concluded with a dazzling display of fireworks and drone performances, symbolizing the enduring friendship between the US and Morocco and a shared vision for the future.
