Sonelgaz-International to launch new 40 MW power plant in Chad

Following the successful inauguration of its 40-megawatt power plant in Gorou Banda, Niamey, Sonelgaz-International is now setting its sights on launching an identical facility in N’Djamena, Chad. This strategic move underscores the Algerian energy giant’s expanding footprint across West Africa.

The upcoming project in Chad comes hot on the heels of a landmark achievement in Niger, where Sonelgaz-International recently completed and inaugurated its first overseas power plant. The Gorou Banda facility, which significantly boosted Niger’s national electricity output, was officially launched in the presence of high-level officials from both Algeria and Niger, including the Algerian Energy Minister Mourad Adjal and Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine.

Chad’s first major power plant project

During the Niamey inauguration ceremony, Minister Mourad Adjal announced that groundbreaking for the 40 MW power plant in N’Djamena would commence within days. This project, also entrusted to Sonelgaz-International, stems from a bilateral agreement signed between Algeria and Chad in May of this year.

The minister also revealed that Sonelgaz-International is exploring additional opportunities in other African nations, with particular interest expressed by Côte d’Ivoire and Mozambique. This expansion reflects the growing demand for Algerian energy expertise across the continent.

Logistical triumph for Sonelgaz-International

The rapid deployment of the Gorou Banda plant in Niger stands as a testament to Sonelgaz-International’s operational prowess. According to Yazid Djellouli, CEO of the company, the project was initiated just days after the Algeria-Niger energy accords were signed in March.

In a statement, Djellouli described the operation as a « monumental industrial and logistical achievement », highlighting the « aerial bridge » setup that involved over twenty cargo flights operated by Air Algérie Cargo. A dedicated team of engineers and technicians, numbering around fifty, worked tirelessly on-site to ensure timely completion.

Djellouli emphasized that the project was completed in record time, marking Sonelgaz-International’s first overseas venture. He added that the company’s proven track record—including past projects totaling 8,000 MW and 4,000 MW—has positioned it as a leading exporter of Algerian energy expertise.

Strengthening regional energy networks

Beyond power generation, Sonelgaz-International is actively engaged in upgrading Niger’s electrical infrastructure, particularly along the Niamey-Agadez corridor. These efforts may lead to future contracts focused on network rehabilitation and reinforcement.

Capacity building and future partnerships

Khalil Hedna, Director of Communication at Algeria’s Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, hailed the Gorou Banda plant as a milestone in Sonelgaz-International’s international expansion. He noted that Nigerian engineers and technicians have received specialized training in plant operation and maintenance, while discussions are underway to establish a spare parts depot in Niger.

Fati Abarchi, Director General of NIGELEC, praised the Algeria-Niger partnership as an « extraordinary experience », emphasizing its lasting impact on Niger’s energy sector. She described the new plant as a historic milestone that will shape the country’s energy future.
