High-level diplomatic discussions in Ouagadougou have opened new avenues for collaboration between Burkina Faso and Serbia, with a focus on defense, security, and professional training. A delegation of Serbian lawmakers, led by Slavenko Ristic—head of both the country’s Defense and Security Parliamentary Commission and the defense technology firm Tehnicki Remont Bratunac—held productive talks with Burkinabè officials on June 3, 2026.
During the meeting, Ristic praised Burkina Faso’s current strategic direction and the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, calling the country’s vision both visionary and inspiring. He went further to emphasize Serbia’s eagerness to engage more deeply with Africa, declaring, “The continent represents the future, and we are determined to be part of that future.”

Responding to Ristic’s remarks, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabè Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, highlighted the growing interest Serbia is showing in strengthening ties with West Africa. He noted that both nations possess untapped potential for mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly in sectors critical to Burkina Faso’s national priorities.
Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré stressed that Ouagadougou is actively pursuing a strategy to diversify its international partnerships, with a particular focus on Eastern European nations. “We are seeking reliable partners with whom we can build sustainable, win-win relationships,” he stated. He also urged the Serbian delegation to help bridge understanding between African realities and European decision-makers.

Ristic welcomed the invitation, pledging to advocate for Burkina Faso and Africa in European forums, aiming to rebalance cooperation dynamics between the two continents. This high-level exchange reflects a broader trend in Ouagadougou’s push to expand strategic alliances beyond traditional partners, reinforcing its commitment to global engagement.
