Senegal’s president bassirou diomaye faye launches new political party kiiraay

DAKAR- A pivotal moment in Senegalese political life recently unfolded. On Saturday, July 25, 2026, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye definitively formalized his political separation from his former Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, by officially inaugurating his own political movement: « Kiiraay » (meaning “shield” in Wolof).

« Kiiraay is the majority party in this country, » President Bassirou Diomaye Faye asserted, speaking to a vibrant crowd of enthusiastic supporters during the inaugural gathering.

« Republican Patriots » serves as the slogan for this nascent political formation. According to the head of state, Kiiraay is founded upon five core values: the Republic, ethics, transparency, fraternity, and diligent work.

Reflecting on the path traversed and the recent political strains that culminated in this rupture, the President of the Republic presented an extended metaphor to convey his renewed commitment:

« Public life has its times of sowing and its harvests; it also experiences seasons of disappointment (…) So, here I am in the fields. Dear Republican Patriots, today we entrust a new seed to the Senegalese land », he declared.

The leaders of the new political entity have already announced that a major founding congress will convene once the summer rainy season concludes. This crucial event will be instrumental in defining Kiiraay’s strategic orientations and formalizing its organizational framework, as the Senegalese political landscape enters an unprecedented period of reconfiguration.
