The political rift between Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has now reached a critical juncture. During a press briefing in Dakar, the former Prime Minister outlined the reasons behind his party, Pastef-Les Patriotes, declining to join the newly formed government led by Ahmadou Alamine Mohamed Lô.
Sonko emphasized that negotiations with the Head of State uncovered deep-seated disagreements on fundamental national priorities. Key areas of contention include judicial reform, transparency in governance, renegotiation of unfavorable economic contracts, and public debt management.
The Pastef leader stressed a lack of sufficient assurances regarding the government’s financial commitments and future dealings with international lenders. He also voiced concerns over subsidy policies and the administration’s approach to judicial governance, highlighting inconsistencies with the party’s own vision for reform.
Beyond policy disputes, the government’s composition became another flashpoint. Sonko argued that, given Pastef’s dominant position in Senegalese politics, his party deserved substantial representation within the executive branch. He insisted that participation in the government would require control over at least half of the ministerial portfolios.
The former Prime Minister also questioned the legitimacy of the new administration, despite several individuals aligned with his movement being included. However, he clarified that Pastef had no immediate plans to challenge the government’s authority, stating that no motion of no-confidence would be introduced.
This stance underscores escalating tensions at the highest levels of governance and signals a new phase of uncertainty in the relationship between the presidency and the party instrumental in the 2024 political transition.
