Senegal: Ousmane Sonko elected president of the National Assembly
Ousmane Sonko was elected on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, as President of Senegal’s National Assembly, just four days after being removed from his role as Prime Minister by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

As leader of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF, the ruling party), Ousmane Sonko secured 132 out of 133 votes cast, succeeding El Malick Ndiaye, who resigned last Sunday.

On Monday evening, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as the new Prime Minister.

Aminou Lô previously served as Minister in charge of Monitoring, Guidance and Evaluation of the ‘National Transformation Program 2050’ under the presidency, followed by the role of Secretary-General of the Senegalese government.
