Senegal lawsuit targets political remarks on Touba’s reputation

Legal proceedings have been initiated following a formal complaint lodged with the Dakar Public Prosecutor’s Office on July 15, 2026, one day after its submission. The complaint, signed by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, targets statements made by a prominent political figure during the unveiling of his party’s new headquarters. The plaintiffs allege that the remarks, which suggested “dirty money flowed into the holy city of Touba”, constitute a deliberate smear campaign against the city’s moral values and the integrity of its residents.

The complainants emphasize that Touba was founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba on principles of religious devotion, ethical conduct, and strict adherence to Islamic teachings. They argue that the accusations directly undermine the city’s spiritual legacy and the dignity of its people. To counter these claims, the plaintiffs have pledged their full cooperation with authorities, offering video footage, written transcripts, and press clippings to substantiate their case.

In their formal request, the group demands an immediate police investigation into the matter. They insist on the urgent questioning of the individual who made the remarks, insisting he clarify his statements and present tangible evidence to support them. Should the investigation reveal no basis for the allegations, the complainants urge the prosecutor to pursue criminal charges under Senegal’s Penal Code for defamation and the dissemination of false information—offenses that carry severe penalties.

This legal move unfolds against a backdrop of heightened political tensions in Senegal, where debates over financial transparency and public declarations surrounding the heart of Mouride Islam continue to spark controversy. The prosecutor’s office in Dakar now faces the task of evaluating the complaint’s validity and determining the next steps in a case that has already sparked strong reactions within Mouride communities in Touba.
