Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the President of Senegal, has officially launched his new political formation, ‘Kiiraay – Les Patriotes Républicains’, marking a significant step in the country’s political landscape after his split with the PASTEF party led by Ousmane Sonko.
The new party was unveiled during an assembly general meeting held at a hotel in Dakar, where its constitution was adopted. The party’s motto, ‘La Patrie d'abord’, emphasizes a focus on defending national interests, strengthening republican institutions, and consolidating the rule of law.
In Wolof, ‘Kiiraay’ means ‘that which protects’, reflecting the party’s aim to accompany President Diomaye Faye’s governance project and unite forces supporting his vision for transforming Senegal.
Following the assembly meeting, delegates unanimously elected Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the party’s president, a move that signals a change in his political stance after leaving PASTEF’s leadership at the beginning of his presidency.
The creation of Kiiraay resulted from the merger of 437 parties, movements, and associations united around a common project to support reforms initiated by President Diomaye Faye and the country’s development ambitions.
Internationally, the emergence of this new formation has garnered attention from partners, investors, and development actors. In Senegal’s pursuit of its Vision Sénégal 2050 strategy, stability and governance clarity remain crucial for strengthening market confidence, attracting investments, and solidifying international partnerships.
The launch of Kiiraay marks a new chapter in Senegal’s politics, which may redefine the balance within the president’s majority coalition and opposition, influencing the framework for future economic and institutional reforms.
