Despite Matvey Safonov’s commendable performances in goal for Paris Saint-Germain since stepping in for Lucas Chevalier, his long-term position as the club’s number one appears uncertain. PSG’s sporting advisor, Luis Campos, is reportedly making significant strides to secure the transfer of FC Porto’s highly-rated goalkeeper, Diogo Costa.

Following their triumph in securing the French championship title after a victory over RC Lens, Luis Campos previously stated that all discussions regarding the transfer market had been put on hold. He emphasized that this decision, made in conjunction with the coach and president, aimed to allow the team to fully concentrate on the upcoming Champions League final scheduled for May 30 against Arsenal. However, this strategic pause doesn’t mean the Parisian club lacks clear intentions for the summer transfer window.
Is PSG pursuing Diogo Costa?
It appears that PSG is keen on acquiring Diogo Costa, the standout goalkeeper for newly crowned Portuguese champions FC Porto. Such a move would suggest that the club is not prepared to fully commit to Matvey Safonov, despite his recent flawless displays in the PSG goal, nor to reintegrate Lucas Chevalier, who was signed for a substantial €40M plus bonuses last summer. While Diogo Costa extended his contract last December until 2030, a notable detail is that his release clause was simultaneously revised downwards, now standing at a reported €60M.
A transfer finalized before the World Cup?
This adjustment to his release clause is widely interpreted as a strong indicator of an impending departure for the Portuguese shot-stopper. Reports suggest that PSG has intensified negotiations, aiming to finalize Diogo Costa‘s transfer before the World Cup kicks off on June 11. The club’s objective is clearly to resolve its goalkeeper situation with utmost urgency. It is also worth noting that Diogo Costa‘s agent is Jorge Mendes, a figure with a well-established professional relationship with Luis Campos. This connection could significantly streamline discussions for a transfer involving the goalkeeper, who is expected to be Portugal’s starting custodian this summer.
