After careful consideration and security assessments, Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire has decided against creating a fan zone for the Champions League final between PSG and Arsenal, scheduled for May 30. The decision follows strong reservations from police authorities regarding the feasibility of such an event in the current climate.
Grégoire initially envisioned a free public viewing area in the capital but reversed course after a Monday meeting with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. The mayor acknowledged the timing was inopportune, citing multiple high-profile events already booked for the same day, including concerts by Aya Nakamura, Damso, and Bouss, all of which would strain law enforcement resources.
Police sources confirmed that the pre-match security situation in the Paris metropolitan area remains complex. With the final match set to air at the Parc des Princes, authorities will deploy significant personnel to ensure safety during the event. Grégoire, however, reaffirmed his commitment to hosting future public celebrations in the city, despite this setback.
Security incidents escalate after PSG semi-final victory
In the aftermath of PSG’s semi-final win over Bayern Munich, tensions flared in the Paris region. Authorities reported 127 arrests, 11 injured individuals—one critically—and 23 officers slightly hurt during post-match disturbances. These figures underscore the challenges of managing large-scale celebrations amid public gatherings.
Last year’s Champions League victory saw over 500 arrests in Paris and surrounding areas after celebrations turned violent. Interior Minister Nuñez had already voiced concerns earlier this month about Grégoire’s unilateral announcement of the fan zone plan, which came shortly after PSG’s qualification. The move drew criticism from opposition councillors, including Eric Schahl, who argued that proper coordination with district mayors was lacking.
