More than 300 individuals have tragically lost their lives at the hands of ADF rebels across the Ituri and North Kivu provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo since the beginning of this year. This alarming figure comes as the United Nations office strongly condemned a recent brutal assault in the village of Ngadi, situated near Beni in North Kivu, which occurred during the night of May 30-31.
The Congolese government confirmed that this particular attack resulted in the deaths of 15 civilians and one soldier.
The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) insurgents have intensified their operations in the Beni region, perpetrating multiple deadly assaults that claimed over 40 civilian lives within a mere three-day span recently.
Rooted in eastern DRC since the mid-1990s, the ADF rebels have been responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians over decades. In 2019, the group formally pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist organization, which now identifies them as its “Central Africa Province” and frequently claims responsibility for their violent actions.
