The first installment of an exclusive series features an intimate conversation with a writer in their homeland. Today, we meet Roukiata Ouedraogo—humorist, actress, and author—born in Burkina Faso, who shares her childhood, early career, and lifelong struggles in Ouagadougou.
“I am a Franco-Burkinabè writer, comedian, and performer. Born in Burkina Faso, I grew up between Fada N’Gourma and Ouagadougou before relocating to France in the early 2000s. My artistic journey has woven together theater, writing, humor, radio, and activism.”
Her voice, her roots, her fight
Roukiata Ouedraogo’s narrative is one of resilience and reinvention. In her own words, she paints a vivid portrait of a childhood shaped by the harsh realities of life in Burkina Faso—scorching droughts, torrential rains, and the warmth of its people—while navigating the complexities of identity as a young woman balancing two worlds. Her father’s unjust imprisonment left an indelible mark, but it was her mother, a pillar of strength, who became her guiding light.
Literature as a bridge between worlds
Through her writing, Roukiata invites readers into her world—a world of laughter and tears, of laughter at the quirks of Ouagadougou’s street vendors and the mischievous antics of neighborhood boys, yet also one that confronts the hardships of corruption and poverty. In Ouagadougou Presse, she captures the spirit of her homeland with humor and nostalgia, blending personal anecdotes with the universal themes of family, friendship, and belonging.
Her second book, Du Miel sous les Galettes, is a poignant tribute to her mother, whose resilience and sacrifices provided a foundation for her own journey. With lyrical prose, Roukiata reflects on the flavors of childhood—her mother’s honey-drizzled galettes, the taste of home, and the enduring bond of family.
“I grew up in a world where laughter and struggle coexisted,” she reflects. “My mother’s strength became my compass, guiding me through the storms and teaching me that resilience is the greatest inheritance.”
Roukiata’s work resonates deeply with readers across borders, offering a rare glimpse into the heart of Burkina Faso through the lens of a woman who carries its spirit with her wherever she goes.
