Ousmane Sonko, the prominent political figure, has finally broken his silence following his departure from the government and the subsequent formation of a new cabinet that notably excludes any representatives from his party, PASTEF.
Speaking to the press, Sonko delivered a series of remarks characterized by pointed criticisms directed at President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Despite this, he insisted that the current disagreements should not be misconstrued as a personal rift between the two leaders.
Reflecting on their relationship, Sonko specifically expressed regret over a perceived lack of dialogue with the head of state.
“The President declined to speak with me at a time when he was engaging in discussions with other individuals,” Sonko stated.
Addressing PASTEF’s absence from the recently formed government, the former Prime Minister emphasized the long-standing political closeness that had historically bound the two factions.
Sonko declared, “Manilén bou kenn dem, na Président nek si cotém, niou nek sunu côté,” underscoring a clear distinction in their political roles while suggesting a need for each side to maintain its position.
Despite the evident tensions, the leader of PASTEF affirmed that his interactions with Bassirou Diomaye Faye have never escalated into direct confrontation.
“We have never exchanged harsh words face-to-face,” he maintained.
Adopting a tone that blended critique with a call to action, Sonko further clarified that his faction does not view itself as an adversary to the President of the Republic.
“We are not President Diomaye’s adversaries. The real adversaries are the rising cost of living, transportation challenges, and the daily concerns of the Senegalese people,” he declared, adding his belief that the political opposition is attempting to capitalize on the current divergences within the executive branch.
These statements emerge within a political landscape defined by the recent governmental reshuffle, fueling widespread speculation regarding the future trajectory of relations among Ousmane Sonko, PASTEF, and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
