N’Djamena denies UN claims of civilian deaths in Lake Chad strikes
The Chadian government has categorically rejected accusations from the United Nations Human Rights Office regarding civilian casualties in military strikes conducted in the Lake Chad Basin against Boko Haram positions. Speaking to the press in N’Djamena on Thursday, government spokesperson and Minister of Communication Gassim Chérif Mahamat delivered a firm rebuttal to the claims.
The government labeled the allegations as « deliberate attempts to undermine the credibility of the Chadian armed forces, » emphasizing that they infringe upon the integrity and honor of the national military. According to the spokesperson, Chad’s armed forces remain steadfast in their counterterrorism efforts across the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin—a region plagued by persistent armed group attacks over recent years.
The authorities assert that military operations are executed with meticulous adherence to international humanitarian law standards. They contend that every precaution is taken to minimize collateral damage and prevent civilian harm during strikes targeting Boko Haram strongholds.
Clarifying military operations in Lake Chad
The Chadian government’s response follows controversy stirred by a United Nations Human Rights Office report suggesting significant civilian losses from aerial operations conducted by Chadian forces in the region. The report has reignited discussions about the conduct of military actions in this volatile area, where clashes between security forces and armed groups remain frequent.
N’Djamena strongly disputes the report’s findings, arguing they lack sufficient substantiation. Instead, the government highlights the critical role of its defense and security forces in stabilizing the region, positioning them at the forefront of the fight against terrorist threats.
The authorities call for a « balanced and responsible » assessment of the security situation and reaffirm their commitment to protecting civilian populations. They also advocate for enhanced international cooperation to better coordinate efforts against extremist groups operating in the Lake Chad Basin.
In this climate of diplomatic tension, Chadian officials reassert their determination to continue operations against Boko Haram while defending the legitimacy and professionalism of their military in an exceptionally complex security environment.
