Mali’s armed forces declare regained dominance over contested regions

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have declared they have regained the upper hand in all areas targeted by coordinated assaults from armed factions operating in the northern and central regions of the country.

In an official statement, military officials detailed ongoing clashes that intensified Sunday near Anifif, located in the northeastern sector approximately 110 kilometers south of Kidal—a location that has witnessed repeated confrontations involving the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA). This surge in violence followed the arrival of significant reinforcements to the rebel faction.

According to the military briefing, FAMa units resisted external pressure with unwavering resolve, sustaining combat operations throughout the day with exceptional bravery and tactical precision. The statement reaffirmed the army’s unwavering confidence in its ability to safeguard national sovereignty, protect civilian populations, and neutralize hostile forces operating within Mali’s borders.

In response to these developments, a spokesperson for the Front de Libération de l’Azawad, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had previously asserted that the group maintained control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also vigorously refuted rumors regarding the death of the FLA’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting that the commander remains actively involved in directing military operations across northern Mali.
