Legal action against Ousmane Sonko over Touba remarks

A legal complaint has been filed against Ousmane Sonko following his controversial statements about Touba, seeking a judicial investigation into the alleged damage to the holy city’s reputation. The move was initiated by a member of the Collectif des petits-fils de Serigne Touba, who formally petitioned the Prosecutor of the Republic near the Dakar High Court on July 14, 2026.

In the complaint, Serigne Modou Maroun Niang—identified as a Senegalese citizen, entrepreneur, and grandson of the city’s founder—argues that Sonko’s remarks, which allegedly described the entry of “dirty money” into Touba, constitute a serious attack on the dignity of the city and its residents. He emphasizes that Touba is built on the spiritual and moral foundations of faith, integrity, and hard work, as taught by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba.

The plaintiff demands an immediate judicial inquiry, including a formal hearing for Sonko to clarify his statements and provide evidence supporting his claims. The complaint also requests a thorough investigation to verify the accuracy of the accusations, with potential legal action for defamation, spreading false information, or other violations under Senegalese law if the allegations are substantiated.

According to the filing, the complainant possesses key evidence, including video recordings, transcripts of the controversial remarks, and media publications that reference Sonko’s statements. This legal challenge arises amid escalating political tensions surrounding the PASTEF leader’s comments, which could lead to further judicial proceedings depending on the Prosecutor’s decision.
