Laurent Gbagbo re-elected as leader of PPA-CI in Côte d’Ivoire
Delegates at the African People’s Party – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI) ordinary congress in Abidjan have reaffirmed their backing for Laurent Gbagbo as party leader.
Historic re-election at Abidjan party congress
Delegates of the African People’s Party – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI) gathered in Abidjan for their ordinary congress on May 14 to reaffirm their confidence in Laurent Gbagbo as party leader. The event, held at the Treichville Cultural Palace, marked another chapter in the political journey of the former Ivorian president.
Overwhelming support for Gbagbo’s leadership
The congress brought together nearly 3,000 party activists who overwhelmingly endorsed Gbagbo’s continued leadership. At 80 years old, the former head of state had expressed intentions in 2025 to step back from official party duties while remaining politically engaged. However, persistent calls from his supporters convinced him to accept another term at the helm of the PPA-CI, which he founded after his return from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Gbagbo was cleared of all charges related to crimes against humanity stemming from the 2010–2011 post-election crisis, allowing him to resume his political activities. His acquittal in 2020 paved the way for the creation of the PPA-CI, which has since become a key player in Ivorian politics.
A strategic transition in sight
With this renewed mandate, party officials aim to strengthen internal organization and revitalize grassroots structures. The leadership transition is seen as an opportunity to gradually usher in a new generation of party leaders while maintaining Gbagbo’s influence. The congress underscored the party’s commitment to consolidating its base and preparing for future electoral challenges.
