The rise of Captain Ibrahim Traoré in Burkina Faso cannot be understood without revisiting a date etched in the nation’s recent history: September 26, 2022. On that day, a supply convoy bound for the besieged town of Djibo fell into a deadly ambush in Gaskindé, a remote location in northern Burkina Faso. The attack, claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, resulted in at least 37 fatalities, including 27 soldiers, and left dozens more injured.
The human toll was staggering, but the political repercussions were even more profound. Just four days later, on September 30, 2022, Captain Traoré orchestrated a swift coup, toppling Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. The rapid succession of these events has since sparked intense scrutiny over the exact circumstances surrounding the Gaskindé ambush and its political fallout.
An investigation abruptly halted
In the aftermath of the ambush, calls mounted for a thorough internal inquiry to determine how a military convoy could have been so precisely targeted. Initial questions focused on several critical aspects:
- The attackers’ exceptional level of preparation;
- Their detailed knowledge of the convoy’s route;
- Gaps in the security arrangements;
- The possibility of leaked information or internal complicity.
These hypotheses pointed toward a sensitive investigation that could have implicated military personnel. However, Damiba’s ousting occurred before any public conclusions could be reached.
To this day, no official report has been made public to definitively clarify the tragedy’s circumstances.
A persistent institutional silence
In any nation facing an attack of such magnitude, standard procedures include an independent inquiry, a detailed report, the identification of potential responsibilities, and—where applicable—legal proceedings. Yet in the case of Gaskindé, these expectations have largely gone unmet.
Three factors continue to fuel questions:
- The lack of official communication on investigation findings;
- The absence of publicly disclosed disciplinary actions against internal actors;
- The absence of information to help victims’ families understand the exact circumstances of their loved ones’ deaths.
This opacity fuels speculation and erodes trust between citizens and military institutions.
The shadow of political context
The Gaskindé attack became a central argument for highlighting the Damiba regime’s inability to restore security. Captain Traoré justified his takeover by citing the country’s deteriorating security situation. Yet one question lingers: if the coup aimed to correct the previous system’s failures, why did the new leadership fail to fully investigate one of the attack’s that justified its rise to power?
If the change in leadership was meant to break from past practices, it also presented an opportunity to establish responsibilities related to Gaskindé and restore public trust. Instead, the tragedy remains shrouded in ambiguity.
Transparency: a cornerstone of governance
Leadership that claims legitimacy through promises of change must also demonstrate transparency. Governance is not merely about denouncing past errors; it requires concrete answers to lingering questions. By failing to clarify the state of the Gaskindé investigation, the military leadership risks reinforcing criticism: demanding accountability from predecessors while resisting the same scrutiny itself.
This situation perpetuates a climate of suspicion, ultimately weakening institutional credibility.
Counterterrorism cannot overlook internal failures
International experience shows that armed groups often exploit internal weaknesses—intelligence gaps, corruption, infiltration, inter-agency rivalries, or command chain dysfunctions. To attribute Burkina Faso’s security crisis solely to jihadist groups would ignore the internal factors that enable their success.
When a military convoy falls victim to such a meticulously executed ambush, the question of internal responsibilities must be examined rigorously. Effective counterterrorism depends not only on operational quality but also on an institution’s capacity to identify and address its own shortcomings.
A strong army relies on trust among soldiers, their leadership, and the population. This trust cannot endure if major national tragedies remain shrouded in uncertainty.
The imperative of truth
Nearly four years after the events, the Gaskindé case remains a sensitive issue in Burkina Faso’s political landscape. The victims’ families, soldiers on the front lines, and the broader public deserve full clarity on the circumstances surrounding this attack.
Beyond political considerations, this is a matter of justice, remembrance, and public responsibility. History demonstrates that no nation can build lasting stability on unresolved shadows. The Gaskindé tragedy will continue to provoke questions until an independent, transparent, and credible inquiry provides definitive answers.
Burkina Faso cannot truly move forward until the answers sought since September 2022 are delivered—a prerequisite for victims’ families to find closure and for institutions to regain essential credibility.
