Gabon’s digital leap: president oligui nguema unveils national data center

In a significant stride towards digital independence, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema officially opened Gabon’s inaugural data center yesterday. Located within the Nkok Special Economic Zone, this state-of-the-art facility was developed by ST Digital Data Center Services, marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s technological advancement. The ceremony also featured the signing of a crucial Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization, and Innovation and ST Digital, designed to foster the growth of Gabonese startups.

This dual initiative is set to significantly enhance local data hosting capabilities, bolster cybersecurity measures, and accelerate Gabon’s overall digital transformation. Adhering to stringent international benchmarks with its Tier III certification, the new infrastructure is poised to expand national data storage capacity, facilitate robust cloud computing services, and provide essential support to government agencies and private enterprises. This strategic move by the head of state underscores a firm commitment to steering Gabon towards a robust and undeniable digital sovereignty.

The collaborative agreement ensures that emerging businesses will gain preferential access to a suite of professional services. Qualifying startups are slated to receive a dedicated virtual machine, 120 GB of SSD storage, 8 GB of RAM, four virtual processors, a public IP address, an SSL certificate, comprehensive technical support, and advantageous pricing.

The Ministry is tasked with identifying eligible beneficiaries, actively promoting local data hosting solutions, and conducting vital awareness campaigns on cybersecurity best practices. Laïka Mba, the Director General of ST Digital, eloquently articulated the profound impact of this development, stating, ”The establishment of a national data center in Gabon transcends mere technological triumph; it represents a definitive act of sovereignty.” She further emphasized, ”It provides the sacred assurance that our state secrets, national archives, public services, and citizens’ data will no longer be reliant on foreign infrastructures.”

ST Digital is committed to upholding the highest standards of data security and providing ongoing technical assistance. This public-private collaboration is expected to catalyze the creation and local hosting of innovative digital solutions within Gabon, cultivating a more fertile environment for technological advancement, job creation, and strategic investments.
