The Gabonese government and the European Union recently concluded a pivotal strategic partnership dialogue at the Palais des Congrès Omar Bongo Ondimba in the Cité de la Démocratie. Chaired by Vice-President of the Government Hermann Immongault and EU Ambassador to Gabon Cécile Abadie, this second session followed up on the initial discussions held in October 2024.
As highlighted by Hermann Immongault, these exchanges align with the Samoa Agreement, the foundational legal framework governing relations between the EU and African, Caribbean, and Pacific nations. The agreement emphasizes “a more balanced, action-oriented partnership that prioritizes tangible impacts from public policies and investments.”
The day-long session covered four key priorities: political reforms and governance, economic outlook, environmental sustainability and natural resource management, as well as multilateral and regional cooperation.
At the close of the meeting, both sides commended the institutional reforms implemented during Gabon’s Transition period. They also shared perspectives on human rights and fundamental freedoms. “No topic was off-limits,” Immongault stated, adding that discussions helped “dispel any uncertainties.”
Economic discussions centered on Gabon’s growth trajectory, ongoing structural reforms, improving the business climate, and measures to boost foreign investment. The Global Gateway initiative also featured prominently in the talks.
Environmental sustainability took center stage, with both parties reaffirming their shared commitment to sustainable forest management. They also explored cooperation in sustainable fisheries, renewable energy, and waste management.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of both Gabon and the EU’s dedication to multilateralism, with broad agreement on regional and international challenges such as maritime security and regional integration.
Moving forward, the two partners are set to deepen their collaboration and continue joint consultations on the identified priorities, fostering an environment of openness and mutual trust.
