Gabon earns un recognition for anti-corruption progress

Eleven years after initial discussions, Gabon has met the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) standards by completing the second review cycle of its compliance with the United Nations Convention against Corruption. Séraphin Ondoumba, UNODC focal point, highlighted this milestone during a high-level dialogue held in Libreville from June 29 to July 1, 2026.

The achievement follows a structured process mandated by UNODC Resolution 3/1, adopted in New York in 2011. It reflects coordinated efforts led by the National Commission for the Fight against Corruption and Illicit Enrichment (CNLCEI), chaired by Nestor Mbou. Gabon is now not only compliant but also actively participates in international anti-corruption mechanisms.

Selected alongside Uruguay by the UNODC secretariat, Gabon has been designated as an evaluating state and tasked with assessing the Republic of Seychelles on critical chapters—specifically Chapter II (preventive measures) and Chapter V (asset recovery)—of the Convention. This responsibility underscores Gabon’s enhanced role in global anti-corruption cooperation.

Key reforms and future steps

The review process has paved the way for several transformative measures:

  • Legislative alignment: Adjustments to national laws before, during, and after the evaluation phase to ensure full compliance.
  • Institutional dialogue: Strengthening collaboration between government bodies and oversight agencies to foster transparency.
  • Capacity building: Training programs to enhance the skills of officials and stakeholders involved in anti-corruption initiatives.
  • Knowledge sharing: Exchange of best practices with peer nations to reinforce effective strategies.
  • Technical and financial support: Identifying gaps and securing resources to sustain long-term anti-corruption efforts.

These reforms reinforce Gabon’s commitment to eradicating corruption and align with the Convention’s broader goals of promoting integrity and accountability in governance.
