Gabon court denies opposition leader’s release bid
Former Gabonese Prime Minister Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze remains in custody after the appeals court in Libreville rejected his procedural nullity request on Tuesday. His legal team has condemned what they describe as arbitrary detention and an irregular judicial process.
Appeals court upholds detention order
Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, the country’s leading opposition figure against President Brice Oligui Nguema, has been held in custody since April 16 while facing allegations of embezzlement and fraud dating back to 2008. On Tuesday, the Libreville appeals court dismissed his team’s request to nullify the proceedings, thus confirming his continued detention. His lawyers argue that the alleged offenses have long since passed the statute of limitations and lack any substantive legal foundation.
Defense team alleges irregular procedures
In an official statement, Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze’s attorney, Me Arthur Vercken, condemned what he termed a “serious violation” of Gabonese law and fair trial guarantees. The party Ensemble pour le Gabon has further claimed that the opposition leader was subjected to “harsh” arrest conditions and denied access to legal counsel during the initial hours of his police custody before being formally placed under detention.
President denies executive interference
In response to inquiries about the case, President Brice Oligui Nguema emphasized the judiciary’s independence, stating, “This is a private matter with no executive involvement.” He reiterated the principle of separation of powers while defending the Gabonese justice system. Formerly serving as Prime Minister under Ali Bongo’s presidency, Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze was defeated by Oligui Nguema in the 2025 presidential election. His detention followed repeated public criticisms of the government, particularly regarding social media suspensions and nationality law reforms.
