French-Morocco ties strengthen as lecornu visits Rabat

The French Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, arrived in Rabat on Wednesday evening for a two-day official visit aimed at deepening the strategic partnership between France and Morocco. The visit follows a period of renewed diplomatic engagement, marked by France’s 2024 recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara Occidental.

Rebuilding bridges through high-level dialogue

Welcomed by Morocco’s Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, Lecornu was accompanied by a dozen ministers for this crucial meeting. The visit culminates in the 15th edition of the High-Level Franco-Moroccan Meeting, a bilateral framework last held in 2019. The two leaders are set to hold key discussions before co-chairing the event, which aims to revitalize cooperation across multiple sectors.

Economic, security, and cultural agreements on the agenda

More than a dozen agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, covering civil aviation, infrastructure, water management, electricity interconnection, defense, and cultural exchanges. A landmark partnership between the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and Morocco’s Ministry of Culture is also in the works. These developments could pave the way for an upcoming state visit by King Mohammed VI to France, a visit already confirmed in principle.

Morocco’s pivotal role in France’s Maghreb strategy

The strengthening of Franco-Moroccan ties reflects Paris’s intent to solidify Morocco as its leading partner in the Maghreb. With security concerns in the Sahel remaining high, France is increasingly looking to Rabat for collaboration, even as relations with Algeria remain cautiously progressing.
