French agent sentenced to 20 years in Mali for state security breach

The Malian judicial system has handed down a 20-year prison sentence to a French national accused of undermining state security. The individual, identified as Yann V., was detained in Bamako in August 2025 and found guilty by the specialized criminal chamber dedicated to counter-terrorism.

In addition to his prison term, the court imposed a 20-year ban on his entry into Mali and levied a fine of 5,400 euros. The defendant had been working under diplomatic cover at the French embassy in Bamako when he was arrested during a joint operation with Mali’s State Security services.

Espionage network uncovered in Bamako

According to Malian authorities, Yann V. was taken into custody alongside several Malian military officers attached to the Armed Forces of Mali (FAMa). These officers have since been dismissed from their posts and are now facing charges of involvement in an espionage network aimed at destabilizing Mali’s transitional government and plotting a coup d’état. Their trial remains pending.

France denies involvement in destabilization

The French government has strongly rejected the allegations against its citizen. In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs labeled the accusations unfounded and emphasized that the individual was engaged in legitimate security cooperation activities. Paris firmly denied any role, direct or indirect, in efforts to destabilize Mali.

Diplomatic fallout escalates

This case has intensified the already strained relations between Bamako and Paris. Following the arrest, France suspended its counter-terrorism cooperation with Mali and ordered two Malian diplomats to leave its territory. The deterioration in bilateral relations coincides with Mali’s military-led government shifting its strategic partnerships toward Russia after the 2020 and 2021 coups.
