France-Morocco: sebastien lecornu’s visit to Rabat strengthens strategic partnership

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has commenced a pivotal two-day official visit to Morocco, signaling a significant advancement in redefining bilateral ties. This high-level engagement comes shortly after King Mohammed VI conveyed a message to President Emmanuel Macron, emphasizing that both nations have entered an unprecedented phase aimed at elevating their unique partnership into a model for the future. This strategic alignment is also intended to pave the way for a forthcoming royal visit to France, during which a treaty solidifying this strengthened alliance is expected to be signed.

This marks Sébastien Lecornu’s inaugural official journey to the Kingdom since assuming his duties in 2025. He is accompanied by a substantial delegation, including a dozen ministers such as Jean-Noël Barrot for Foreign Affairs and Laurent Nunez for Interior. The head of the French government is slated for a private discussion with his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch, before jointly presiding over a high-level summit. This significant gathering is anticipated to culminate in the signing of multiple bilateral agreements spanning crucial areas like economics, immigration, justice, and defense.

Economically, the dialogue is centered on collaborative development initiatives across Africa. Leveraging Morocco’s established role as a key logistical and financial hub, enterprises from both nations are keen to forge joint ventures targeting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The Kingdom’s robust commercial activity, evidenced by a 20.7% surge in intra-African exports in 2025, coupled with its integration into the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), provides a stable environment for investments. Furthermore, amid global geopolitical strains, particularly in critical maritime passages like the Strait of Hormuz, Morocco’s advanced port infrastructure stands out as a highly strategic alternative route for logistics connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Beyond economic cooperation and industrial co-production, regional security remains a paramount concern for both Paris and Rabat. The two capitals share profound anxieties regarding the persistent instability in the Sahel region, characterized by permeable borders and a resurgence of terrorist activities. By enhancing their security and migratory coordination, France and Morocco are committed to imbuing this exceptional partnership with tangible actions, a partnership that their respective diplomatic efforts aspire to strengthen and elevate further.
