The concluding day of Ligue 1 action was unfortunately overshadowed by severe disturbances, as two of the ten scheduled fixtures on Sunday evening experienced pitch invasions. Notably, the match in Nantes against Toulouse was ultimately called off following an intrusion by fans, marking a chaotic end to the season.
The final round of Ligue 1 fixtures was marred by serious incidents. On Sunday night, two of the ten scheduled matches were disrupted by supporters entering the field of play, specifically in Nice and Nantes.
In Nice, ultras breached security barriers towards the end of their clash with Metz, necessitating intervention from riot police to restore order. However, the situation escalated more dramatically in Nantes.
At the Beaujoire stadium, FC Nantes, already facing relegation to Ligue 2, saw their final game against Toulouse abruptly halted. Just 22 minutes into play, the encounter descended into chaos as dozens of mostly masked Nantes supporters stormed the pitch, compelling players to retreat to the changing rooms.
“a true disgrace”
After a forty-minute suspension, the game was ultimately abandoned. This abrupt end was particularly disheartening for Nantes’ coach, Vahid Halilhodžić, who was marking the final match of his illustrious career from the dugout.
“This is a true disgrace,” he remarked. “I wished I could have approached the supporters to tell them to stop. While I can fully understand their frustration, this is not the way. I have given everything I could as a coach and as a man. Unfortunately, the reality is truly awful.”
The Ligue de football professionnel has yet to issue a public statement, but the governing body has initiated an investigation into the incidents. FC Nantes faces potentially severe repercussions. Beyond a temporary closure of sections of their stadium, the club could incur a points deduction for their upcoming Ligue 2 season.
This mirrors a similar fate suffered by Saint-Étienne four years ago, which saw them penalized six points before the start of their championship due to comparable disturbances.
