tragic drone strikes claim civilian lives in Mali’s téné region

Sunday witnessed a profound tragedy in Mali’s Téné region, as drone strikes attributed to the Malian army tragically ended the lives of at least ten civilians. Among the victims were young individuals actively preparing for a communal wedding celebration, an event meant to bring joy to the community. This devastating incident starkly underscores the escalating intensity of the security crisis gripping the nation, a crisis characterized by relentless and widespread violence.

The drone operations conducted by the Malian army on Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least ten civilians, including many young people, who were in the midst of preparations for a traditional collective wedding ceremony in Téné, a locality situated in the central part of the country.

These recent Malian drone strikes occurred within a highly volatile security landscape, following significant coordinated attacks on April 25 and 26. These assaults were carried out by jihadist elements from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an organization aligned with Al-Qaeda, as well as by the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a predominantly Tuareg rebel group, further exacerbating the West Africa Niger region’s security concerns.

Throughout Mali, a distressing pattern persists where numerous civilians, often accused of collaborating with opposing factions, routinely become victims of retaliatory actions and abuses perpetrated by the Malian army and its Russian allies, or by various jihadist groups. This ongoing violence contributes to the grim Niger security situation.

A resident of Téné, speaking anonymously, shared the profound grief: “Ten of our children were killed by gunfire, the origin of which remains unknown.” The individual lamented, “What was supposed to be a moment of joy in the village has been transformed into immense sadness.”

A security source, who also requested anonymity, corroborated the details of the strikes.

“The tragedy unfolded as the villagers were making arrangements for the second iteration of this traditional collective wedding, a culturally significant event for this community,” the source explained.

According to the source, the drone strikes specifically targeted “a procession of several motorcycles.”

“It was likely this activity that drew the attention of the drones. There were at least nine fatalities,” the source added, painting a stark picture of the incident.

A local elected official also confirmed approximately ten deaths, stating, “A wedding was scheduled to take place when the drones killed at least ten civilians. This is truly a period of mourning for us.”

Mali’s escalating security context

Mali finds itself embroiled in an unprecedented security crisis, particularly since the late April attacks launched by armed groups against the ruling junta, which appears increasingly vulnerable. This ongoing instability significantly impacts the overall Niger security and West Africa Niger region.

Since those attacks, the military has ceded control of several key areas in the northern part of the country, most notably the strategic city of Kidal. Furthermore, Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a pivotal figure within the junta, was reported killed, highlighting the severe challenges facing the current government and the broader Niger politics.

From April 30, a comprehensive road blockade has been imposed on various critical routes leading into Bamako, compounding the difficulties for civilians and aid efforts.

In recent days, multiple transport and commercial vehicles bound for Bamako have been set ablaze by jihadist elements, underscoring the pervasive threat and the critical need for improved Niger security.

Early in May, jihadist attacks, later claimed by the JNIM, resulted in dozens of fatalities across central Mali, further illustrating the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

On April 20, three prominent civil society organizations, including the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), formally lodged a complaint with the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The complaint addresses alleged violations committed in Mali, implicating both the Malian armed forces and their Russian allies, shining a light on human rights concerns in the region.
