Over 1,000 Ebola Cases Reported in DRC as Death Toll Surpasses 500
The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has claimed over 500 lives, according to the latest data from the Congolese Ministry of Health.
A total of 1,561 cases have been confirmed, with 506 fatalities reported. An additional 253 individuals have been declared recovered, while 628 patients are currently receiving treatment in isolation or hospitalization.
The Ebola outbreak, which was declared on May 15, has now spread to 36 health zones across the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. Community transmission of the virus continues to occur in these areas.
Ituri Province remains the hardest hit, accounting for over 91% of all confirmed cases and nearly 84% of reported deaths since the start of the outbreak, according to Congolese authorities.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the Bundibugyo strain of the virus is continuing to evolve rapidly and spreading sustainably. As of July 1, at least 10,821 people who have come into contact with confirmed cases are being monitored for signs of illness in Ituri and North Kivu as part of efforts to contain the outbreak.
