On Saturday, July 4, Burkina Faso experienced a series of coordinated terrorist assaults that left at least fifty soldiers and Volontaires pour la Défense de la Patrie (VDP) dead. The attacks, claimed by the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM)—affiliated with Al-Qaeda—struck multiple regions, including the north, northwest, and southwest. Militants targeted military bases, looting equipment and weapons as they retreated after intense firefights.
early morning assault on di military camp
The offensive began just before dawn, around 5 a.m., when jihadist fighters launched a surprise attack on the military camp in Di, located in the Sourou province of northwestern Burkina Faso. Despite resistance from security forces, the attackers breached the camp’s defenses before withdrawing. Local sources reported that at least twenty-three soldiers and eleven VDP members were killed during the raid. Video footage later emerged online, showing the militants displaying what they claimed were the bodies of twenty-two Burkinabe soldiers and VDP fighters before retreating.
additional strikes in the southwest and center-west
The same day, the JNIM also carried out attacks in Dalan and Tiére, in the southwest and center-west regions, respectively. These assaults resulted in the deaths of at least eighteen soldiers, with reports confirming significant material damage in both locations. While no civilians were harmed in these particular incidents, testimonies described scorched vehicles left in the attackers’ wake.
northern region targeted without casualties
In the northern part of the country, militants targeted Thiou and Séguénéga but did not inflict any human losses. Instead, they set fire to several civilian vehicles, leaving behind a trail of destruction visible to local residents.
no official response yet
As of now, neither military officials nor government representatives in Burkina Faso have issued any public statements regarding the attacks. Meanwhile, the JNIM has continued to circulate images and videos of the assaults across social media platforms, reinforcing their claims of responsibility.
