A sudden and violent confrontation has erupted in the heart of Zemio, shattering the fragile peace in southeastern Central African Republic. Around 7:50 PM local time, gunfire erupted between Central African Armed Forces (FACA) soldiers and Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group, turning the town’s streets into a battleground.
The escalation marks a dramatic shift in a region already plagued by instability. Tensions between FACA troops and Wagner operatives have been simmering since early 2025, fueled by growing disagreements over operational control and security strategies. What began as a tense standoff has now escalated into open combat, with heavy and light weapons fire forcing terrified residents to seek shelter.
While sporadic gunfire continues to echo through the town, authorities have yet to confirm the full extent of the damage. Preliminary reports indicate at least one civilian casualty—a woman struck by a stray bullet during the crossfire. Meanwhile, two FACA soldiers were critically injured in the clashes. No casualties have been reported among the Wagner mercenaries.
The situation remains fluid, with no clear resolution in sight. Local observers warn that the confrontation could further destabilize the already fragile security landscape in the Haut-Mbomou region. Until a permanent ceasefire is established, the future of Zemio—and the surrounding area—remains uncertain.
