Northern Mali plunged into fierce combat as Anéfis emerges as the new flashpoint
The battle for control over northern Mali has intensified with devastating consequences. In a televised address broadcasted by national television, the Chief of Staff of the Malian Armed Forces, General Jean Élysée Dao, disclosed a grim toll following intense fighting in the pivotal town of Anéfis, located roughly 100 kilometers south of Kidal.
A heavy human cost on both sides
The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have borne the brunt of this offensive. General Dao confirmed the loss of nearly thirty soldiers, honored as “martyrs,” along with over sixty wounded, several of whom are in critical condition.
On the opposing side, military authorities claim to have inflicted severe losses on the enemy coalition—comprising separatist factions, notably the Front de libération de l’Azawad, and Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist groups (JNIM). The military asserts that numerous enemy combatants were neutralized. Meanwhile, the rebellion admitted in a statement the loss of “some of its finest fighters,” though no precise figures were provided.
Anéfis: the linchpin of northern Mali
The town of Anéfis holds immense strategic value. For the Malian Armed Forces, bolstered by Russian allies, securing Anéfis is critical to severing the supply lines of armed groups and safeguarding the route to the Kidal stronghold.
According to military sources, the clashes were exceptionally brutal. A contingent of Malian soldiers and Russian reinforcements found themselves temporarily pinned down in a military camp, repelling repeated assaults. The tide turned only when a heavily armed convoy, departing from Gao and supported by aerial strikes, arrived to regain control over the battlefield. Rebel factions, for their part, described their withdrawal as a “strategic retreat” to prevent civilian casualties.

These deadly confrontations underscore the enduring complexity of Mali’s security crisis, which has persisted since 2012. For the military-led transitional government in Bamako, this tragic outcome presents a stern test of its legitimacy.
