The Embassy of Côte d’Ivoire to France and Monaco has issued a stern rebuke following recent comments made by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France’s La France Insoumise party, regarding the political landscape of Côte d’Ivoire.
In a formal statement released in Paris, the diplomatic mission condemned Mélenchon’s remarks as an affront to the nation’s institutions, its people, and President Alassane Ouattara. The ambassador, Maurice Kouakou Bandaman, emphasized that the French politician’s assertions—particularly the claim that the 2025 presidential election was unconstitutional—were not only unfounded but also deeply disrespectful.
Diplomatic outrage over foreign interference
The embassy’s declaration, issued on July 16, 2026, labeled Mélenchon’s statements as irresponsible, insulting, and degrading, stressing that he lacks any authority or expertise to critique Côte d’Ivoire’s electoral processes. The document underscored the nation’s sovereignty, achieved on August 7, 1960, and rejected any attempt by foreign figures to undermine its democratic foundations.
Strengthening ties through mutual respect
The statement also highlighted the long-standing friendship and cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and France, tracing their ties back to the leadership of Félix Houphouët-Boigny and Alassane Ouattara. It warned that political leaders in France should prioritize the preservation of these bilateral relations over divisive rhetoric.
Legal action to address perceived slights
Concluding its response, the Ivorian embassy announced its intention to pursue all available legal avenues to hold accountable those responsible for what it deemed an intentional slight against the nation and its president. The declaration, signed by Ambassador Bandaman, serves as a firm reminder of Côte d’Ivoire’s unwavering stance against external interference in its internal affairs.
