Côte d’Ivoire honors women’s contributions with inaugural national week
The Femme Ivoirienne en Politique (FIP) organization launched the first-ever National Women Builders Week on July 30 at the Yopougon town hall. Scheduled for August 1-4, 2026, the event coincides with Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th independence anniversary.
Reflecting on progress and future challenges
The initiative, themed « 66 years of Ivorian independence: what gains for women and what future perspectives? », aims to celebrate women’s vital contributions to the nation’s political, economic, social and cultural progress. It also seeks to identify ongoing challenges and propose solutions to strengthen public policies benefiting women.
FIP President Rebecca Yao emphasized the importance of this moment: « We felt it was essential to pause and assess the progress made for women since independence, while addressing persistent obstacles and proposing concrete solutions. »
A packed program of reflection and recognition
The three-day event at Yopougon’s town hall will feature a national symposium with:
- A keynote address to kick off discussions
- 16 thematic panels covering critical areas including female leadership, healthcare, education, economic empowerment, youth development and women’s rights
- An exhibition showcasing trailblazing women’s journeys and successful female entrepreneurship initiatives
Conclusions will be compiled into a white paper submitted to relevant authorities for implementation. The week concludes with a gala dinner on August 4 at Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire, honoring 66 pioneering women who have shaped Côte d’Ivoire’s development since 1960.
Building a lasting legacy
Rebecca Yao announced plans to make this an annual event: « Rather than introducing new proposals each year, we’ll track progress on previous resolutions to ensure sustained advancement. »
Yopougon Deputy Mireille Bamba praised the initiative, with support confirmed from Mayor Adama Bictogo. Organizers envision this becoming an annual platform for dialogue, reflection and recognition of women’s indispensable role in nation-building.
