Kinshasa witnessed a landmark event in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s mining sector yesterday as the Ministry of Mines celebrated the winners of the prestigious Buanya Excellence Awards. The ceremony, held at the Pullman Grand Hotel in the capital, recognized the groundbreaking proposals from top civil servants of the National School of Administration (ENA) who tackled critical challenges facing the country’s mining industry.
In attendance were key figures including the Secretary General of Mines, representatives from oversight bodies, jury members, participating civil servants, and distinguished guests. The event culminated in the announcement of winning teams after weeks of intensive research and analysis.
Transforming challenges into solutions: The competition saw 48 civil servants organized into six teams, each addressing pivotal themes such as mining governance, resource transparency and traceability, fraud prevention, artisanal mining regulation, geological exploration, equitable revenue redistribution, and the development of new mining projects.
Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba emphasized the DRC’s pivotal role in the global energy transition. “Our mineral resources are not just economic assets—they are the foundation for building a modern nation with quality infrastructure, sustainable jobs, and essential social services,” he stated. The minister praised the winners for embodying the values of excellence, integrity, and innovation, urging them to become ambassadors for transformative change in mining governance.
The initiative aligns with President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo’s vision and the Prime Minister’s strategic priorities, which prioritize human capital development and good governance as cornerstones of public administration. By fostering meritocracy and results-driven approaches, the government aims to position the DRC as a leader in responsible and innovative mining practices.
The ceremony concluded with a group photo, symbolizing the beginning of a new chapter where young administrative talent will play a crucial role in reshaping the country’s mining landscape for future generations.
