Chinese Oil Firm Suspended in Chad Over Environmental Violations
Chad’s government has halted operations of a major Chinese state-owned oil company after finding repeated violations of environmental safety regulations. The move follows a sweeping review of all petroleum firms operating in the country.

Chad’s Ministry of Petroleum and Energy took decisive action in mid-August, ordering the immediate suspension of CNPCI, a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), after inspections revealed consistent breaches of environmental protocols. The decision underscores the government’s commitment to enforcing ecological standards across the energy sector.
In response, authorities announced a comprehensive audit of all oil companies operating within Chad’s borders. This initiative aims to evaluate compliance with national and international environmental safeguards, ensuring sustainable resource extraction while protecting local ecosystems.
