- The Nantes-Toulouse fixture, the 34th and final matchday of Ligue 1, was permanently called off.
- Nantes supporters stormed the pitch, deploying smoke flares onto the playing surface.
The conclusion of the match and indeed the entire season proved tumultuous for both competing clubs. The Ligue 1 encounter between Nantes and Toulouse, part of the 34th and ultimate round of the championship, was definitively abandoned. This decision followed a pitch invasion by Nantes supporters who also ignited and threw smoke flares onto the field, as confirmed by the match delegate and referee.
At the time of the interruption, the score remained 0-0 in the 22nd minute. Nantes, already relegated to Ligue 2 and positioned 17th, faced Toulouse, sitting 10th with no further stakes in the season. The dramatic events unfolded when fans from the Tribune Loire surged onto the Beaujoire pitch, prompting referee Stéphanie Frappart to immediately send both teams back to their changing rooms.
“The decision to permanently halt the match was made by the Prefect for security reasons,”
declared international referee Stéphanie Frappart during a brief press conference. Her statement came approximately 40 minutes after the initial suspension of play.

During the halt, Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodzic remained pitchside, visibly distressed and confronting the approaching supporters, only to be held back by security personnel. The 74-year-old tactician appeared dejected minutes later in the Beaujoire corridors, confiding to the Ligue 1+ commentator that this would mark his final coaching appearance, an experience he found “very painful.”
Concurrently, within minutes, the Nantes supporters retreated to their designated stands, which were then secured by numerous CRS (riot police). Despite their efforts, several skirmishes could not be entirely prevented. A crisis unit, comprising the Prefect, law enforcement representatives, club officials from both sides, and the match referees, immediately convened to determine the definitive outcome of the fixture.
After more than 30 minutes of deliberation, Stéphanie Frappart and the match delegate addressed the press to confirm the permanent abandonment of the game. Notably absent from the match were Waldemar Kita, the club’s owner-president, and his son Franck, the deputy general manager, despite having shared lunch with the players earlier that day before departing Nantes.
A similar incident occurred last season during the 26th matchday of Ligue 1, when the Montpellier-Saint-Étienne game was definitively interrupted. That occasion also involved Montpellier supporters launching flares onto the pitch and into the stands. Consequently, Montpellier was handed a forfeited match and their Étang de Thau tribune, home to their ultras, was closed for the remainder of the season.
