Chad has achieved a significant milestone at the World Urban Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan, gaining eligibility for a crucial international climate initiative. The nation is now the 11th country to qualify for the United Nations Green Climate Fund’s Building Climate Resilience of Urban Populations (BCRUP) program, expanding the fund’s membership from its previous ten nations.
This esteemed international acknowledgment underscores Chad’s dedicated efforts in confronting the severe impacts of climate change, including recurrent floods, internal population displacement, and broader climatic disruptions that profoundly affect its urban areas.
During the forum, the Chadian delegation, spearheaded by Minister Mahamat Assileck Halata, held productive discussions with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. Their dialogue centered on critical urban resilience challenges and explored avenues for future cooperation. These discussions culminated in the approval of an initial project, earmarked for funding between $900,000 and $1 million, which is anticipated to pave the way for more substantial financial support from UN-Habitat in the coming months.
