Caritas in Sahel unites to tackle Mali crisis

The Caritas network across the Sahel is joining forces to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Mali and neighboring regions. This coordinated effort follows a strategic meeting in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, which kicked off on February 19 and will conclude on February 23.

Strengthening regional collaboration for urgent aid

Representatives from Caritas branches in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Senegal gathered to establish a unified communication framework. The goal? To enhance emergency response capabilities and streamline operations across these four nations, which have shared challenges in recent years.

The initiative is part of the Emergency Appeal 28/2012, a project dedicated to boosting the Caritas network’s preparedness and response to crises triggered by the conflict in Mali. Father Isidore Ouédraogo, Executive Secretary of Caritas Burkina Faso, emphasized the importance of this regional collaboration during the opening session.

Uniting under a single strategy

The meeting brought together communication and emergency response leaders to develop a regional system capable of rapid mobilization. By fostering real-time information sharing, the Caritas teams aim to improve their ability to deliver aid efficiently in high-pressure situations.

Scaling up support for displaced populations

With an estimated 300,000 Malians forced into neighboring countries due to insecurity, the need for coordinated action has never been greater. The Caritas network plays a critical role in providing shelter, food, and medical assistance to those affected by the crisis.
