Cameroon: Laurent Esso represents President Paul Biya at Alexis Dipanda Mouelle’s funeral
The President of the Republic has designated the Minister of Justice as his personal envoy for the final tribute to the former First President of the Supreme Court.
President Paul Biya’s personal representative will attend the funeral of former Supreme Court President Alexis Dipanda Mouelle, according to an official correspondence.
In a letter dated June 10, 2026, addressed to the Minister of State, Minister of Justice, Keeper of the Seals, President Biya named Laurent Esso, the current Justice Minister, as his personal representative for the ceremonies honoring the late jurist.
Alexis Dipanda Mouelle, who passed away on May 4, 2026, at the age of 84, served as the First President of the Supreme Court from 1990 to 2014. His funeral proceedings began on June 22 and will conclude on June 27 in his hometown of Bonakou-Bwapaki in the Littoral region.
Funeral schedule and key moments
The tribute program unfolded over several days, starting with evening prayer sessions at the family home in Yaoundé’s Bastos district from June 22 to 24. On June 25, the body will be taken from the Yaoundé General Hospital morgue at 10 a.m., followed by judicial tributes at the Supreme Court.
In the afternoon, a mass will be held at the Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles in Mvolye, concluding with a vigil at the family home. The following day, June 26, the funeral procession will depart for Bonakou-Bwapaki, with a stop in Douala at the family concession in Akwa for another vigil before final burial rites on June 27.
Legacy of a judicial icon
A graduate of the University of Paris, Alexis Dipanda Mouelle began his judicial career in 1965. He rose through the ranks to become Secretary-General of the Ministry of Justice in 1975 before serving as First President of the Supreme Court for 24 years, until his retirement in 2014. His successor, Daniel Mekobe Sone, continues his legacy in Cameroon’s highest court.
Born on March 25, 1942, in Bonakou-Bwapaki, Dipanda Mouelle leaves behind a lasting impact on Cameroon’s judicial system and political landscape.
