Aldiouma Sow, a key figure in the Senegal’s Pastef les Patriotes National Political Bureau, has forcefully refuted allegations of a secret agreement between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. In a detailed statement shared on social media, Sow dismissed the notion that Faye had struck a deal while imprisoned at Cap Manuel Prison prior to his release.
Dialogue as a guiding principle, not a political tactic
Sow emphasized that President Faye’s commitment to dialogue is rooted in principle rather than convenience. He pointed to the President’s National Dialogue initiative in May 2025, where Faye dedicated extensive time to discussions despite no constitutional or ethical obligation to do so. According to Sow, the President’s approach reflects a deep-seated belief in inclusive governance, contrasting sharply with Sonko’s claims of a clandestine agreement.
Exposing misinformation and defending party unity
The Pastef official went further, challenging what he described as a dangerous messianic drift within the party. He accused unnamed factions of attempting to impose a leadership cult, citing controversial decisions like the 2022 legislative nominations, where long-standing party members were sidelined in favor of last-minute allies. Sow warned that repeating this pattern in upcoming elections would “spell political doom for Pastef’s grassroots.”
His statement also served as a rallying cry for party members who have remained in government despite internal pressure. “Be proud of your choices,” he urged. “You may be excluded from WhatsApp groups or suspended from national bodies, but no one can strip you of your commitment to this patriotic project.”
A call to action for undecided allies
Sow extended an olive branch to hesitant members, urging them to abandon Sonko’s divisive rhetoric before it’s too late. “To our brothers and sisters, cadres, and deputies who may still be tempted by this destructive messianism, there’s still time to reconsider your stance,” he concluded.
