Benin senate’s first leadership elected in Porto-Novo

On a pivotal Thursday in early August 2026, lawmakers in Porto-Novo gathered to establish the inaugural leadership of Bénin‘s upper legislative chamber. The newly formed Senate solidified its structure by confirming Patrice Talon as its first president, alongside three deputies tasked with steering the institution’s core functions.

This landmark session, held in the capital, signals a major stride toward full operationalization of the Senate, as envisaged by the Constitution. With its leadership now in place, the chamber can commence its legislative duties with renewed momentum.

Following the vote, Patrice Talon was elected to lead the Senate, assuming responsibility for overseeing proceedings, representing the chamber externally, and ensuring smooth institutional operations. His second-in-command, Louis Vlavonou, will provide critical support, taking the helm whenever necessary.

The Senate also named Alassane Séidou as rapporteur, entrusting him with organizing parliamentary work and documenting key decisions. Adidjatou Mathys was appointed as deputy rapporteur, reinforcing the leadership team with her expertise.

The newly installed Bureau represents the Senate’s governing body, tasked with coordinating administrative tasks, setting the legislative agenda, and upholding the chamber’s internal rules.
