The Bénin political landscape has shifted after the recent presidential election, with the Forces cauris pour un Bénin émergent (FCBE) officially departing from the opposition bloc. This move comes as Les Démocrates (LD) reaffirmed their commitment to remaining in opposition during a special national council meeting held on May 9.
The LD’s decision, announced by party spokesman Lambert De La Pierre Sodji, was formalized in a communiqué signed by Nourénou Atchadé, the party’s leader. The document highlights the LD’s long-standing registration as an opposition party with the Ministère de l’Intérieur since April 26, 2022, stating: « Les Démocrates solemnly reaffirms its dedication to political opposition ».
The party emphasizes the importance of a credible, structured opposition for a thriving democracy, vowing to hold the incoming administration of Romuald Wadagni accountable while adhering to republican institutions.
FCBE’s strategic shift after electoral setbacks
The FCBE’s departure from the opposition follows lackluster performance in the presidential and legislative elections. Their candidate, Paul Hounkpè, secured just 5.95% of votes, trailing far behind President-elect Romuald Wadagni. In the parliamentary elections, the party failed to secure any seats in the Assemblée nationale.
According to Yaya Garba, a senior FCBE official, the party’s decision reflects voter preferences. « The people’s choice demands a new political direction », he stated. The FCBE also congratulated outgoing President Patrice Talon on his two terms and praised the election process as « peaceful and well-organized ».
With the FCBE now aligning with the ruling majority, Les Démocrates emerge as the primary opposition force in Bénin. The party did not contest the presidential race due to insufficient political endorsements under the Code électoral béninois. Their recent council meeting coincides with the country’s transition to a new government following the finalization of election results.
