Algeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with Chad reached a new milestone with the groundbreaking ceremony for a 40-megawatt power plant in N’Djamena. The event, led by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Chadian counterpart Allamaye Halina, underscores the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Algeria’s Sonelgaz International to develop the power plant
The project, initiated under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives, highlights the growing energy cooperation between Algeria and Chad. Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of Algeria’s Sonelgaz Group, has been tasked with overseeing the construction of this gas turbine-powered facility. Designed to meet the rising electricity demand in Chad’s capital and surrounding regions, the plant will enhance energy security and foster economic growth.
During the groundbreaking event, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb emphasized the project’s role in translating high-level political commitments into tangible outcomes. He noted that the initiative reflects Algeria’s dedication to supporting Chad’s development in vital sectors, particularly those that improve living standards for its citizens.
Strategic partnership anchored in shared goals
In his address, Ghrieb reiterated Algeria’s unwavering support for Chad, calling the project a testament to the strong political will uniting both nations. “This initiative embodies the firm political resolve of our leaders to elevate Algerian-Chadian relations into a robust strategic partnership based on effective solidarity, shared progress, and mutual interests.”
He added that President Tebboune remains deeply committed to deepening fraternal ties and consolidating bilateral cooperation. “The shared vision of our two countries is to build a more integrated and prosperous African continent,” he stated. Ghrieb also pointed out that this project is one of the first tangible outcomes of the renewed momentum following the official visit of Chad’s president to Algeria in April 2026, which resulted in ambitious cooperation agreements across multiple sectors.
Regional stability through African-led cooperation
Ghrieb framed the project within Algeria’s broader vision for African cooperation, emphasizing its potential to drive shared development. “We believe in an Africa built on active solidarity, concrete initiatives, productive investments, and partnerships that generate wealth for our people,” he declared.
He highlighted how this vision aligns with continental integration efforts, noting that Algeria and Chad are prioritizing transformative infrastructure projects. “The Trans-Saharan Highway, fiber-optic interconnections, and improved air transport and logistics will unlock inland regions, expand trade, and attract investments,” he explained.
African solutions for African challenges
Addressing regional issues, Ghrieb affirmed the alignment between Algeria and Chad on continental matters. “We are committed to continued coordination and dialogue on regional and continental issues,” he said. “This approach reflects our shared belief in the unity of our peoples’ destinies and the need to promote homegrown solutions to African challenges while respecting national sovereignty.”
In closing, he reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to supporting Chad’s development journey. “On behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, I renew Algeria’s steadfast commitment to supporting the Republic of Chad and strengthening our bilateral partnership for the shared progress, stability, and prosperity of our nations,” Ghrieb concluded.
