Togo-US partnership strengthens local governance and decentralization efforts

The deepening of cooperation between Togo and the United States in local governance, decentralization, and social cohesion was the focal point of discussions between the Minister of Territorial Administration, Local Governance, and Traditional Affairs and Kimberly M. McClure, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Lomé.

During a courtesy visit on June 2, 2026, the American diplomat engaged in constructive exchanges with the minister on shared priorities, particularly in territorial governance and local development. Key topics included the progress of Togo’s decentralization process, capacity-building for local authorities, and strategies to enhance social cohesion through the involvement of traditional leaders and community actors.

The minister outlined the country’s administrative structure and highlighted ongoing government reforms aimed at improving public service efficiency at the local level and bridging the gap between state services and citizens.

In her remarks, Ms. McClure reaffirmed the U.S. Embassy’s commitment to supporting local governance dynamics in Togo. She emphasized Washington’s eagerness to better grasp the challenges of decentralization to more effectively align its assistance with ongoing initiatives in this critical area.

Shared priorities for stability and inclusive growth

The dialogue extended beyond institutional matters to address the security challenges facing the West African subregion. Both delegations underscored the need to sustain joint efforts toward regional stability, peace, and sustainable development, reinforcing the partnership’s broader strategic alignment.

This meeting reflects the robust and constructive relationship between Togo and the United States, demonstrating a shared dedication to advancing reforms that foster effective local governance and inclusive development for the benefit of all citizens.
