Togo has unveiled a bold new geopolitical and security blueprint for the Sahel region, presented during a high-level gathering in Lomé over the weekend. The initiative, unveiled to regional leaders and international stakeholders, positions Togo as a pivotal connector between the Sahel and the wider global community.
The summit drew participation from prominent figures, including delegates from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), alongside envoys from key international partners such as France and the European Union.
The newly introduced strategy is designed to foster constructive dialogue with the governments of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso—nations that have increasingly distanced themselves from ECOWAS and traditional Western allies in recent years, opting instead to strengthen ties with Russia.
“Togo is prepared to leverage its deep regional experience and diplomatic strengths to bridge divides, promoting stability and cooperation between the Sahel and the international community,” stated Robert Dussey, Togo’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, underscoring the country’s proactive role in shaping the region’s future.
The five-pillar strategy—spanning political engagement, regional security collaboration, counterterrorism efforts, and enhanced economic integration—was introduced as part of Togo’s 2026–2028 Sahel roadmap. Representatives from the Alliance of Sahel States responded positively, expressing strong interest in deepening collaboration.
“True regional security hinges on ending the presence of foreign forces that threaten peace and stability in neighboring nations,” stressed Abdoulaye Diop, Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighting a shared priority among Sahel allies.
Across the Sahel, persistent threats from extremist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State continue to claim countless lives, while expanding their reach into coastal nations such as Togo and Benin.
