Togo: opposition party challenges proposed constitutional overhaul

The Alliance Nationale pour le Changement (ANC) has voiced strong objections to recent speculation regarding a new political dialogue centered on a potential constitutional revision in Togo. In a statement released on May 28, 2026, the party, led by Jean-Pierre Fabre, condemned these discussions as a political diversionary tactic and reiterated its firm opposition to any initiative lacking broad national consensus.

According to the ANC, reports suggesting impending talks to amend the constitutional text once again raise serious questions. The party asserts that such an endeavor would fail to address the genuine democratic and governance concerns of the Togolese populace. Instead, it would merely serve to further solidify the existing political framework established by recent institutional reforms.

In its official communication, the political organization declared its refusal to participate in any process it deems a “sham dialogue.” The ANC urged democratic forces, civil society organizations, and Togo’s international partners to remain vigilant against any reform that does not emerge from a comprehensive national agreement.

Furthermore, the ANC continues to hold reservations about the current Constitution. The party contends that institutional alterations implemented over recent years still provoke concerns regarding their legitimacy and their capacity to fulfill the democratic aspirations of the citizens.

Through this public stance, the opposition party reaffirms its conviction that any significant constitutional reform must be preceded by an inclusive dialogue involving all political and social stakeholders across the nation. This condition, it emphasizes, is crucial for ensuring the credibility and public acceptance of any future reforms.

This declaration comes at a time when institutional matters remain a central focus of the national political debate. As rumors intensify about a possible new constitutional revision, the ANC aims to clearly distance itself and preempt any initiative it believes would contradict the spirit of a consensual democratic process.
