Sonko urges reforms to boost African parliamentary union efficiency

During the 85th executive session of the African Parliamentary Union (APU), National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko held a key meeting with the union’s executive committee chair, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge. The high-level discussion took place this Thursday, June 4.

According to official records, the bilateral talks centered on the APU’s core missions, organizational structure, and strategies to enhance its operational effectiveness. In a continent grappling with escalating challenges, Sonko emphasized the need for transformative reforms within the union to amplify its influence on Africa’s political and institutional landscape.

Boosting APU’s impact through systemic changes

Ousmane Sonko presented concrete proposals to streamline the APU’s decision-making processes and optimize its governance framework. His key argument: a functional overhaul is essential to ensure the union’s recommendations align with continental priorities and deliver tangible outcomes for African citizens.

The Senegalese parliament leader also highlighted the critical importance of synchronizing the APU’s agenda with that of the African Union (AU). This alignment, he noted, would foster greater cohesion among African institutions, enabling them to address shared challenges with unified strategies and coordinated policy actions.
