Senegal’s president sacks Ousmane Sonko as prime minister
Ousmane Sonko is no longer the Prime Minister of Senegal. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has just relieved him of his duties in an official announcement.
Ousmane Sonko has been removed from his position as Senegal’s Prime Minister by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The announcement was made on national television by the Senegalese head of state.
This decision follows a period of strained relations between the two political figures.
With Sonko’s removal, the entire cabinet—including ministers and deputy ministers—has also been dissolved.
The former Prime Minister took to social media to share his reaction, stating: “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep soundly at the Keur Gorgui residence.”
Sonko’s dismissal also marks the dissolution of the Republic’s government. The Presidency has confirmed that a new Prime Minister and government will be appointed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Sonko played a pivotal role in facilitating Faye’s rise to power in 2024. After being barred from running himself, Sonko endorsed Faye as the candidate, campaigning vigorously alongside him. Faye’s victory in the presidential election was decisive, winning over 54% of the vote in a single round.
