Senegalese actress bigué Diop indicted on dual charges, sparking legal debate

In a developing legal saga gripping Senegal, prominent actress Bigué Diop, also known as Mame Dior, finds herself at the center of a high-profile case. The 32-year-old personality is currently facing two significant accusations, drawing considerable attention to the nation’s judicial system and its societal norms.

The initial chain of events began on March 26, when Ms. Diop was called to the gendarmerie. This summons was in response to a defamation complaint she herself had lodged, following the dissemination of videos on TikTok that alleged her involvement in theft. However, the situation took an unexpected turn during her official hearing. Reports indicate that investigators subsequently implicated her in a theft case, leading to her own apprehension.

Further complicating the legal proceedings, a search of her mobile phone was conducted as part of the ongoing inquiry. This examination reportedly uncovered information that led to a second, highly sensitive charge: “acts against nature.” This accusation specifically pertains to alleged homosexual relationships, a matter of significant legal and social contention within Senegal.

By April 2, a judge formally indicted Bigué Diop on both sets of charges. For the alleged theft, which encompasses accusations of criminal association and money laundering, she has been placed under judicial supervision. The more contentious “acts against nature” charge, however, has resulted in her being subjected to electronic monitoring, signifying a stricter form of control.

Ouseynou Ngom, Ms. Diop’s legal representative, has vocally challenged the validity of these charges. He has particularly criticized the manner in which his client’s phone was accessed, asserting that the search constitutes a clear violation of Senegal’s existing cybersecurity legislation. The defense team has publicly stated its intention to petition the Indictment Chamber to nullify the entire procedure.

This case unfolds against a backdrop of intense debate surrounding Senegal’s anti-homosexuality laws, which have seen recent toughening by members of the National Assembly. Beyond Bigué Diop’s specific circumstances, a series of similar arrests and accusations continues to fuel growing alarm among human rights advocates, who express deep concerns over the implications for individual liberties in the country.
