Senegal politics: prime minister challenges presidential stance on political funds

In a rare public confrontation at the National Assembly, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko openly challenged the President of Senegal on the management of political funds, marking a significant moment in the country’s political landscape.

Speaking during a session of parliamentary questions, Sonko made his position clear: « The President made an error in this matter. I do not agree with his approach, and I hope his stance will evolve. »

Long-standing demands for transparency

Highlighting his party’s persistent advocacy for financial oversight, the Prime Minister pointed out that calls for stricter control over political funds have been central to their platform since 2014. « Our movement has been demanding accountability for political funds for over a decade—first in 2014, then in our 2019 manifesto, and again in our 2024 proposals. »

The Prime Minister emphasized that the public had been assured that no state resources would be used without proper supervision. He stressed that the debate is not about eliminating these funds entirely, but ensuring they operate under a transparent framework. « We never called for their abolition—we demanded accountability. »

Rejecting misconceptions and defending governance

Sonko dismissed rumors suggesting that political funds might be redirected to the Prime Minister’s office, noting that his administration already manages a fund exceeding one billion CFA francs. For him, the core issue lies in public trust. « Citizens have long suspected these funds are used to buy political loyalty. Not a single franc should escape oversight. »

He reiterated that the government’s priorities remain governance and transparency, ensuring that every public resource is accounted for in line with democratic principles.

N’Famoussa Siby, a key figure in the administration, was also present during the session, reinforcing the government’s unified stance on financial accountability.
